Come along to the Théâtre Montansier to see a performance of Molière’s play *The Doctor in Spite of Himself*.

In this comedy by Molière, Sganarelle is a drunken woodcutter and a wife-beater. To get her own back, his wife Martine leads some servants, who are looking for a doctor, to believe that he is a brilliant but eccentric physician: he only admits to his talent after being given a thorough thrashing with a stick.

Forced to play this part, Sganarelle goes to the bedside of Lucinde, a young woman who is pretending to be mute to escape an arranged marriage. Using a completely made-up charlatan’s jargon, the fake doctor not only manages to fool everyone, but above all helps Lucinde to elope with Léandre, the man she truly loves.
