Come along to the Théâtre Montansier for a classical music concert dedicated to Mozart and Schubert.
Mozart: String Quartet K. 465 ‘Les Dissonances’
With its unprecedented harmonic audacity, the introduction to the ‘Dissonances’ Quartet astonished Mozart’s contemporaries. Whilst some musicians attempted to correct its ‘errors’, Haydn staunchly defended Mozart: ‘If he wrote it that way, it is because he had his reasons. ’ Once the initial shock had subsided, the work asserted itself with dazzling intensity. Oscillating between tension and calm, it unfolds a contrast of moods with striking vividness, bringing the cycle dedicated to Haydn to a beautiful close.
Schubert: String Quartet No. 14 ‘Death and the Maiden’
When it was first performed, the famous Quartet in D minor also baffled the audience, who were disoriented by its explosive intensity. Entirely haunted by an obsession with death, this masterpiece conveys Schubert’s anxieties as he faced his own end: a fierce struggle in which, from the first note to the last, a sense of abandonment clashes with the will to live.
