Presentation
Decades later, between 1820 and 1822, Beethoven composed his magnificent trilogy of sonatas, Op. 109, 110 and 111. According to his biographer Schindler, the composer, by then completely deaf, is said to have conceived these masterpieces to refute a newspaper report claiming that he was an artist past his prime.
In 1842, Schumann hurriedly completed his Piano and String Quintet, Op. 44, finding himself physically and mentally exhausted. Yet the work gives no hint of this suffering: dedicated to his wife Clara, who described it as brilliant and thrilling, it exudes a striking vigour and remains a landmark of chamber music.
