Come and see a performance *Les Races* by Ferdinand Bruckner.
In *Les Races*, Ferdinand Bruckner offers a strikingly lucid account of German youth in the 1930s, collective indoctrination and the rise of anti-Semitism. Written as early as 1933, this visionary play stands out as one of the first dramatic works to directly denounce the Nazi regime.
At the heart of the drama, the love between Karlanner, a medical student, and Hélène, from a family of assimilated Jewish upper middle class, is swept away by the fascist tidal wave. As the party comes to power, their relationship is shattered: Karlanner allows himself to be swept up by National Socialist ideology and methods, whilst Hélène, turning to the resistance, becomes aware of her Jewish identity and the mortal dangers that lie in wait for her. Bruckner thus meticulously dissects the psychology of the masses and the way in which collective pressure crushes individual consciences.
