Presentation
The revival of ‘Spartacus’, an opera by the Italian composer Giuseppe Porsile, is a major event in the world of Baroque music. This concert is performed by the Orkester Nord ensemble, conducted by Martin Wåhlberg.
One of the leading musical figures of the early 18th century, Giuseppe Porsile was appointed composer to the Imperial Court in 1720. A contemporary of Caldara, Fux, Conti, Porpora and Vivaldi, he stood among the most distinguished composers of his generation. Yet much of his work has remained largely unknown. Premiered in Vienna during the Carnival season of February 1726, "Spartacus" is considered one of his finest operatic achievements and is one of the very few Baroque operas dedicated to the legendary gladiator.
From its first performances, the opera enjoyed considerable success thanks to its compelling libretto and richly expressive score. The title role was created by the renowned baritenor Francesco Borosini, one of the most celebrated singers of the era. Possessing an extraordinary vocal range, Borosini inspired some of the greatest composers of his time. His portrayal of Spartacus, particularly in the dramatic mad scene of Act III, played a key role in the opera’s popularity.
Set during the final days of Spartacus’ revolt against Rome, the story unfolds as the gladiator leader finds himself trapped in Capua. Amid political conflict and military pressure, he seeks to win the heart of the noble Vetturia while arranging the marriage of her daughter Gianisbe to the Roman Licinio. Through themes of freedom, power and human ambition, the opera combines dramatic intensity with dazzling vocal virtuosity and moments of comic relief.
Three hundred years after its premiere, this new production brings "Spartacus" back to life through a meticulous reconstruction of the original score and period instrumentation. Presented in a carefully prepared new edition, it offers audiences a rare opportunity to rediscover the dramatic brilliance of Porsile’s music. The title role is performed by Italian tenor Luigi Morassi, whose vocal artistry and dramatic talent promise an unforgettable interpretation of this iconic character.
