Presentation
Opera-ballet in three acts to a libretto by Étienne Morel de Chédeville, first performed at the Théâtre Royal in Fontainebleau in 1783.
An immense success from the moment of its premiere in 1783, Grétry’s *La Caravane du Caire* left a lasting impression, to the extent that its chorus ‘Victory is ours!’ was adopted by Napoleon’s troops. This work, with its patriotic overtones, paints a colourful, oriental-inspired picture: amidst the sands of Egypt, the brave Frenchman Saint-Phar attempts to rescue his fiancée Zélime from the clutches of a slave trader intent on handing her over to the local Pasha.
