Presentation
During the reign of the young Sun King, dance and music played a central role in court life.
Against all odds, the two big winners of this historic tasting were American wines. This famous “Judgment of Paris” upended the conventional wisdom of the time and marked a turning point in the international recognition of California wines, which were now considered the equals of the most prestigious French vintages.
To mark the fiftieth anniversary of this now-legendary event, the Napa Valley Festival commissioned a one-act opera titled The Judgment of Paris. This original work humorously and elegantly revisits one of the most memorable episodes in the history of wine.
Set to music by Jake Heggie, whose works are regularly celebrated at the Metropolitan Opera, and with a libretto by Gene Scheer, this sparkling score portrays the encounter—and at times the clash—between the Old and New Worlds through their winemaking traditions.
At the crossroads of memory, discovery, and celebration, Le Jugement de Paris brings to life a defining moment in the contemporary history of wine. The icing on the cake: some audience members will even have the opportunity to participate in a tasting comparing French and American wines.
