Presentation

Come and enjoy this performance of Pergolesi’s masterpiece "Stabat Mater" at the Royal Chapel. Two countertenors perform this iconic work.
Candlelight Concert

This performance of Pergolesi’s "Stabat Mater" brings to life a remarkable chapter in French musical history and highlights the strong cultural connections between Versailles and Italy during the 18th century. Originally introduced to France by two Italian castrati from the Royal Chapel of Louis XV, the work quickly became one of the most admired pieces of sacred music of its time.

Just months before his death at the age of twenty-six, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was commissioned to compose a new "Stabat Mater" to replace an earlier setting by Alessandro Scarlatti. Despite his declining health, he created a score of extraordinary emotional power, portraying the suffering of the Virgin Mary through a deeply expressive musical language inspired by Italian opera. Premiered in 1736, the work soon became one of the defining masterpieces of the Baroque era and left a lasting mark on European music, particularly in France.

Brought to the court of Louis XV and later performed at the renowned Concert Spirituel in Paris, the composition generated tremendous enthusiasm. Audiences were captivated by the genius of the young Neapolitan composer, whose untimely death only enhanced his legend. Throughout the 18th century, the popularity of the "Stabat Mater" remained unparalleled.

To capture the beauty and emotion of this celebrated duet, Théo Imart and Maximiliano Danta blend their voices in the spirit of the original performers. Accompanied by the Royal Opera Orchestra and conducted by Chloé de Guillebon, they deliver a moving and elegant interpretation of one of the greatest treasures of sacred Baroque music.
