Presentation
Lecture given by Mr Cyrille Poirier-Coutansais on his book ‘La mer, une infographie’ (The Sea, an Infographic). Published by CNRS Éditions.
Did you know that the Vikings reached the shores of America 500 years before Christopher Columbus? That barely 20% of the seabed is known? That we now consume more fish produced by aquaculture than from fishing? That most of Israel's drinking water comes from desalinated seawater? That the entire landmass of Polynesia covers no more than the area of Corsica, while its maritime space is as vast as the entire European continent?
[...] Fascinated by the incredible medical innovations derived from marine organisms, you will no doubt look with curiosity at the laser weapons carried by certain warships, while the Antikythera mechanism may leave you speechless...
Cyrille P. Coutansais is director of the research department at the Centre d'Études Stratégiques de la Marine (CESM) and a lecturer at Sciences Po.
