Inspired by Greek mythology, Gary Owen has invented a modern-day Iphigenia, combative, funny and furious, about the social classes most affected by the drastic cuts to health and social budgets.

Rock'n'roll tragedy

Effie lives in Splott, a district of Cardiff, the capital of Wales, affected by deindustrialisation, unemployment and impoverishment. Effie is the kind of girl you don't look in the eye when you see her in the street, who you take the liberty of judging casually. You think you know Effie, but you don't know the half of her.

Every Monday, she throws herself into a spiral of alcohol and drama, emerging after three days with a hangover worse than death, only to start all over again.

And then, one evening, she is given the opportunity to be more than that.

The journey of an unpampered child, an ordinary story about a disadvantaged girl trying to survive. It seems basic, like Ken Loach, it's social and tough, but with humour, in the Anglo-Saxon way: you never feel sorry for yourself. It's a jungle and you have to get out of it. And one of the facets of this writing is humour. The text is deliberately written in raw, contemporary language that grips you but never knocks you out. Effie laughs at herself and her story, even if it's not funny. And there's a way out, a crack through which the light can still shine. This is theatre that speaks to us of today's world, its underprivileged and their wanderings. Not to be missed!
