To mark the 150th anniversary of the Third Republic, the Château de Versailles is exceptionally opening the Congress Chamber and the flat of the President of the Congress to the public on a self-guided and guided tour.
IThe Congress Hall, built in 1875 in just six months in the heart of the Midi wing, seats nearly 1,500. It is larger than the hemicycles of the National Assembly and the Senate.
It is a fine example of the official architecture of the early Third Republic, with its eclectic style and palatial feel. Its astonishing décor is inspired by the grand flat of Louis XIV and contains many references to the Sun King.
Between 1875 and 1953, sixteen Presidents of the Republic were elected here, and today it is on these benches that the Members of Parliament and Senators meet in Congress to amend the Constitution or give speeches by the President of the Republic. Congress met on 4 March 2024 to give its final verdict on the inclusion of voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVG) in the Constitution.
