Presentation
From the stage to the theater, the balcony has been a recurring theme throughout history as an architectural, social, and artistic motif. The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover this unique threshold that has inspired so many artists and continues to raise questions today.
WHY AN EXHIBITION ON THE THEME OF BALCONIES?
The theme of the 2025 European Heritage Days is architectural heritage.
The town of Bougival wanted to include the Maison Berthe Morisot in this theme, as two architectural features known to the painter remain: the central wooden staircase and the
balcony on the west facade. Berthe Morisot immortalized the latter in her painting Sur le balcon de la chambre d'Eugène Manet (On the Balcony of Eugène Manet's Bedroom).
As an architectural motif, the balcony is a space of visibility both inside and outside, a threshold, a material. As a social motif, the balcony is an elevation that distances itself from the street. As a motif in literature and theater, the balcony is the setting for many memorable scenes. As a pictorial motif, the balcony has inspired many artists over the centuries.
During the lockdown due to the Covid epidemic, the balcony became an essential place that offered breathing space and communication. Since then, real estate professionals have noticed a surge in buyer interest in apartments with balconies.
The exhibition invites viewers to question, through the prism of art, this architectural feature that is both inside and outside.
