Discover the special exhibition ‘Costume at Versailles in the 18th century’ and explore the history of clothing in the city that once dictated fashion trends throughout the kingdom.
As the seat of power and the official residence of the monarchy until 1789, Versailles was at the heart of fashion trends and the craftsmanship associated with finery.
Throughout the tour, the guide introduces the various trades within the fashion and clothing industries, from tailors to textile merchants, including hairdressers and wig-makers. The tour continues through the different social classes, from modest garments – often mended and adapted to suit the fashions of the elite – to the refined attire of the aristocracy. Clothing, accessories, artefacts and paintings provide a better understanding of the role of costume in 18th-century Versailles society.
