Presentation
This is the incredible true story of thirty women who, as part of an army with no female members, landed in Normandy and liberated France. The author, Ms Demay, originally from Chesnay-Courtois, wanted to tell this story because it is also the story of her grandmother.
In 1939, Jacqueline, then travelling in New York, found herself plunged into the turmoil of exile. She crossed paths with Florence Conrad, a wealthy and eccentric American woman who had the crazy idea of setting up the first female ambulance unit on the front line. Seeing this as her ticket home, Jacqueline unwittingly embarked on an epic journey that would go down in history.
Named ‘Les Rochambelles’ in honour of Rochambeau, the French hero of the American War of Independence, these exceptional women would search for the wounded at the height of battle and transport them to a mobile American hospital that followed the troops.
