Presentation

Come and see the exhibition "The Vital Impulse of the Line" at Carré à la Farine!
Upon the whiteness of the paper, ink asserts its presence. Each movement of the brush gives birth to a form, traces a path, and gradually redefines the space. Lines are never isolated; they engage in a dialogue, complementing or opposing one another based on their orientation, intensity, and the distance between them. Little by little, the once-blank surface becomes a living entity, animated by the successive gestures of the artist.

The richness of this transformation lies in the diversity of graphic expression. The pressure applied to the brush, the amount of ink deposited, the rhythm of execution, and the very morphology of the characters each lend a distinct identity to every stroke. At times thick and assertive, at others fine and light, the lines may break into sharp angles or extend into fluid, rounded motions. In his calligraphic work, KOSEI explores these contrasts, harnessing the full range of possibilities offered by the gesture.

The concept of "vital breath" thus transcends the mere energy of a swift movement. It manifests just as powerfully in restraint, slowness, and the moments of suspension that punctuate the brushwork. The lines unfold in a delicate balance between density and lightness, proximity and distance. From these interactions emerges a visual dynamic that seems to extend the movement well beyond its physical execution. Even after the brush has left the paper, the composition retains a resonance that continues to engage the viewer’s gaze.

For some, the ability to read the characters opens a gateway to the literary dimension of the poem. Yet, an understanding of the text is not essential to appreciate the work; the diversity of forms, the rhythm of the lines, and their interplay are more than enough to evoke an emotional response. The eye can then mentally reconstruct the successive movements of the hand and, within the finished composition, discern the trace of the gesture that brought it into being.
