Presentation
A play that recounts the time Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin lived together in Arles, and the events that led to the famous severed-ear incident.
The final event—Van Gogh cutting off his ear—is known to everyone. But how did he reach such a state of despair that he committed this senseless act?
A few weeks earlier, Gauguin had joined Vincent at his house in Arles. Having lived in Provence for some time, Van Gogh was leading a relatively serene life there and painting with renewed enthusiasm. His ambition at the time was to establish an artists' house—a place for creation and sharing.
The play chronicles these nine decisive weeks. While the narrative is condensed, it is grounded in a genuine commitment to historical accuracy. It was written under the supervision of David Haziot, the biographer of Van Gogh (for Gallimard) and Gauguin (for Fayard).
